Celebrate British Sandwich Week at The Mere
British Sandwich Week is here…and it’s our chance to celebrate of one the best British inventions – the Sandwich! With over 11.5 billion sandwiches in the UK being consumed a year, we thought we’d take a quick look back at its creation and also to reveal how we will be getting involved…
History of the Sandwich
The Sandwich was invented by John Montague, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, who came up with the idea while he was gambling. As he was so into his game, he didn’t want to stop for anything to eat and instead asked for some meat between two slices of bread – as this meal wouldn’t require any utensils and could be eaten with one hand – allowing him to continue with his game. Others began saying that they’d have the same as Sandwich, and that’s where the idea and name came from!
